Record / capture → Path first

HDMI capture & passthrough path

If you only need to play on a monitor or TV, skip capture hardware. Use a direct HDMI cable and keep what already works.

Updated: 2026-09-25

Lead answer (play-only): Console/PC HDMI OUT → suitable HDMI cable → display HDMI IN. No capture card. KEEP your display cable when the picture already meets your target mode.
Confidence: standards-framed capture topology • device feature matrices vary

1. Play-only → skip capture

KEEP the HDMI path

Xbox Series, PlayStation 5, and most living-room sources already output HDMI. For gameplay or watching on a TV/monitor you do not insert a capture device. Capture chips in the Engine exist for record/stream goals—not for “make the TV show a picture.”

Open the Engine with Record / capture off for play-only pairs. Related: Xbox display guide and PS5 HDMI cable path teach play-only keep-yours.

2. When capture is a real goal

Record / stream topology

Typical path: Source HDMI OUT → capture device IN → PC (USB/Thunderbolt) for encode. Optional: capture device HDMI OUT (passthrough) → TV/monitor so you can play while recording.

  • Confirm the capture device documents your target resolution/refresh/HDR class.
  • Cable class still matters on both legs (source→capture and capture→display).
  • PC CPU/GPU encode limits are separate from HDMI link bandwidth.

Passthrough caveats (standards-level)

Passthrough is optional convenience, not required for play-only. Some units pass a subset of features (for example reduced HDR metadata, limited VRR, or lower max mode than a direct cable). Treat marketing “4K passthrough” as a claim to verify against the unit’s published matrix—not as proof of every console feature.

Bandwidth honesty

High modes (4K high-refresh, full chroma, HDR) need Ultra High Speed–class HDMI links where the mode requires them. A capture path that works at 1080p60 may fail at higher modes without implying the TV is broken—test direct cable first for play diagnosis.

3. Decision tree

Suggested: PS5 or Xbox → HDMI display. Leave Record / capture off for play-only; turn it on only when you truly need capture.

Open Engine play-only (PS5 → HDMI) → Open Engine with capture intent →
