Nintendo Switch 2 → display path
TV Mode video goes through the Nintendo Switch 2 dock HDMI path. Keep the official dock, Ultra High Speed HDMI, and Switch 2 AC adapter. Do not treat Switch 2 like a Steam Deck Alt Mode host.

1. KEEP the official dock path
Documented TV Mode stack
Nintendo Support’s “How to connect to a TV” flow requires:
- Nintendo Switch 2 console
- Nintendo Switch 2 dock
- Nintendo Switch 2 AC Adapter (model no. NGN-01)
- Ultra High Speed HDMI cable (included with Switch 2; original Switch HDMI is not Ultra High Speed and cannot be used for Switch 2 TV mode)
Tech Specs list video output via the HDMI connector in TV mode (up to 4K60 class; 120 fps at 1080p/1440p when selected)—not as a laptop-style USB-C monitor upstream.
Wrong paths to avoid
- USB-C Alt Mode direct to a USB-C/portable monitor — not the documented TV Mode path; do not claim success from connector shape alone.
- Original Switch dock / HAC AC / non–Ultra High Speed HDMI — Nintendo documents these as unsuitable for Switch 2 TV mode.
- Laptop Thunderbolt/USB-C docks — wrong category for Switch 2 living-room video.
2. Play-only → skip capture
Viewing ≠ recording
If you only need the TV or monitor to show the game, stop at dock → HDMI → display. Capture cards belong only when you intentionally record or stream—see the capture guide for contrast, not as a play requirement.
3. Cable class only when needed
Ultra High Speed HDMI
When high modes fail despite a capable HDMI input and correct dock/AC, check cable class. Prefer KEEP the included Ultra High Speed cable when the picture already meets your target. Shared bandwidth framing matches our console HDMI cable guide (class only—not a second Switch SKU list).
4. Third-party docks (honesty, not a list)
Verify with Nintendo / the maker
Third-party docks may advertise “Switch 2 ready.” Handshake and firmware behavior can be contested. We do not publish a third-party dock compatibility matrix or shopping roundup. If you consider one, verify with Nintendo guidance and the manufacturer—then prefer the official dock when TV Mode already works.
Practical checklist
- Use Switch 2 dock + NGN-01-class AC + Ultra High Speed HDMI.
- Select the correct TV HDMI input / game mode.
- If picture already works → KEEP YOURS; stop.
- Do not buy a USB-C video cable hoping to skip the dock for TV Mode.
- Leave Engine Record / capture off for play-only.
Try the Compatibility Engine
Suggested: I have → Nintendo Switch 2. Connect to → 4K / 120 Hz HDMI display or 1440p / 165 Hz HDMI monitor for dock HDMI play-to-TV. If an AV receiver is in that HDMI path, choose AVR / AV receiver (HDMI path) — still dock HDMI, not USB-C Alt Mode, and KEEP YOURS when direct TV + eARC already works. Intents: Video + Highest refresh; leave Record / capture off for play-only.
